Unfound from All Directions

by Su Wu

February 7 - March 2, 2025

Soot Gallery is pleased to present Su Wu's "Unfound from All Directions". Wu paints her internal landscapes- places in her mind that sharpen with a lifetime of exploring. These silent landscapes reveal a place deep in the interior- a private place to revisit freely that is immune to change. Portrayed in these landscapes are seeds buried deep in the earth, a light at the end of a tunnel, or a free-floating existence at the bottom of the sea. The paintings are composed of thousands of small brush strokes with shades of green, mauve, indigo and pale yellow. The colors blend in the viewer's eye, resulting in forms that from a distance appear as grey-hued horizons or shifting organic masses. Closer inspection reveals a delicate handling of light filtering and reflecting as though deep underwater. These landscapes serve as Wu’s internal sanctuaries. They are familiar places to find solace when the world outside is unknown. "Nobody knowing where you are, not waiting for or by anyone, and not having to return anywhere—represents the ultimate peace. “ says Wu. It is her celebration of simple freedom at core, that is both private and fleeting. Wu’s multinational background and experiences of moving between many countries and cities inform her desire for the solace found in this inner place that remains unchanged and ever peaceful. Her inner sanctuary is untethered - free from time, a private anchor as she moves through the world.
